Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) issued the following statement today after passage of the House Republican budget, which was introduced by Congressman Paul Ryan (WI-01):

“Today, my colleagues in the House supported a budget that has proved to be a responsible plan to balance the budget in 10 years. As I have said in the past, this budget preserves our entitlement programs, repeals Obamacare, and puts the fiscal health of our nation first.

“House and Senate Democrats have a starkly different vision for the fiscal future of our nation. That could not be more evident by the fact that it took them nearly four years to introduce a budget. Their plan is not responsible, centering around tax increases instead of addressing our entitlement crisis, and does not balance.

“While Congress continues to debate a path forward on the budget, it is encouraging to see that the House and Senate were able to come together and pass the continuing resolution to fund the government through the fiscal year without waiting until the 11th hour. The CR continues to reduce federal spending and limits the growth of government, and I am pleased that we avoided pushing the issue to the brink and threatening a government shutdown.”

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie today issued the following statement following a renewed effort in the U.S. Senate for a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution:

“I am pleased to see that my Senate colleagues are working to address Washington’s biggest problem – runaway spending. A balanced-budget amendment would put to rest widespread concerns about our country’s fiscal health – concerns that have frustrated our economic recovery and jeopardized our national security.

“I came to Washington hopeful that I could make things better for my children. A balanced-budget amendment would ensure that we don’t gift them the debt of our past and present.”

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie issued the following statement today after voting in support of H.R. 444, the Require a PLAN Act, which would require President Obama to submit a plan to balance the budget:

“For the fourth time in five years, President Obama has failed to deliver a budget proposal on time. A true leader does not put his most basic responsibilities on the back burner, as the President has, especially when the Senate has gone 1,376 days without passing a budget.

“The bottom line is that Washington has a spending problem. Our country can’t afford the annual trillion dollar deficits that have become the norm under President Obama, and we must balance the budget. It is clear, left to his own devices, President Obama will not focus on the budget or our nation’s path toward fiscal responsibility.”

Guthrie Opposes Senate Bill, Demands Spending Cuts

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today issued the following statementafter voting against the Senate’s measure to avert the fiscal cliff:

“After months of discussing how to prevent our country from falling off the fiscal cliff, we reached a deal that was not balanced in its approach. I have said from the very beginning that ensuring we do not go over the fiscal cliff should be a combination of tax reform coupled with spending cuts that are vital to the health of our nation.

“Leadership in both the House and Senate worked tirelessly to come up with an agreement to ensure taxes do not go up for millions of Americans.  While I support that goal, it was ultimately not enough. For too long, House Republicans were told they would see a good-faith discussion on spending cuts. Yet again, we have been told no, that spending cuts will come next time.

“As I travel across the Second District, my constituents continue to ask when Congress will cut spending. My fellow Kentuckians understand that the real fiscal cliff is the one our children will fall off of – in five years when they will be $22 trillion in debt.

“Throughout the economic recession, families and business owners across America have had to tighten their belts and make sacrifices. Our government needs to do the same. This measure, however, does not make a serious effort in making lasting fiscal reforms and therefore I cannot support it.”
