Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) issued the following statement following the July 2012 employment report showing the unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent.

“This report reiterates what every American already knows – our economy continues to struggle and uncertainty is getting worse. After 42 consecutive months of the national unemployment rate being above eight percent, I think we can all agree that this is not acceptable.

“The private sector is clearly not doing fine and I hope President Obama realizes that. Tomorrow marks 200 days since he last met with the Jobs Council he appointed. Maybe it’s time he schedule a meeting.

“Our nation is at a critical point. We can either continue on this route of high unemployment and uncertainty or move toward a path to encourage growth and investment. I choose jobs and a booming economy.”

Washington, DC – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted today on the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012 and voiced his concern about looming defense cuts in addition to the nearly $500 billion in cuts already identified.

"Our military is the bravest in the world," said Congressman Guthrie. "Our troops fight for our freedoms and have created a strong national defense. To maintain this role, we cannot drastically cut this vital funding."

H.R. 5872, the "Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012" would require the President to submit to Congress a detailed preview of the sequestration required by the Budget Control Act, in addition to how the required spending cuts would be implemented.

"This legislation is the first step in protecting our military from an arbitrary cut. If sequestration happens in January, we would have the smallest ground force since 1940, the smallest fleet since 1915 and the smallest tactical fighter force in the history of the U.S. Air Force. Quite simply, sequestration will end our technological advantage during a time of economic uncertainty," said Congressman Guthrie.

"Representing Ft. Knox and the surrounding area, I know how important it is to fund the Department of Defense. These funds directly benefit our troops, their families and our country’s future. Our military has done everything that has been asked of them and they deserve to know what cuts are coming," added Congressman Guthrie.
