Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) participated today in a joint press conference announcing the introduction of legislation to begin construction of the northern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline. “The Keystone XL pipeline represents everything that our country needs right now – immediate job creation that would develop a national energy plan that is both secure and affordable,” said Congressman Guthrie. “This is a key component to addressing our economic struggles.” Congressman Guthrie is an original co-sponsor of the bill introduced by Congressman Lee Terry (NE-02) that would approve the construction, operation and maintenance of the northern portion of the pipeline. This portion of the pipeline runs from the Canadian border to the South Dakota/Nebraska border. To date, President Obama has denied construction permits for this 1,179 mile segment of pipeline based on environmental concerns surrounding the 88 mile portion that crosses the State of Nebraska. This bill would allow construction to begin on the 1,091 miles of the Keystone XL pipeline that do not cross Nebraska and have already received an environmental study. “This shovel-ready project should be cheered. Our national unemployment rate of 8.2 percent can and should be improved. Approving construction of the northern portion of the pipeline is a good place to start. I hope my colleagues in the Senate and President Obama will support this effort to put job creation and energy security first,” added Congressman Guthrie. ### |
