Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted this week for H.R. 3662, the Iran Terror Finance Transparency Act. This bill enhances congressional oversight of U.S. economic and trade sanctions against Iran to protect the U.S. from national security threats.

“Iran has a record of supporting terrorist activities and groups around the world that pose a grave threat to the United States. We must act to protect the American people by ensuring the necessary safeguards are in place to prevent a financial windfall that benefits terrorists as a result of President Obama’s nuclear deal,” said Congressman Guthrie.

President Obama’s nuclear agreement provided significant sanctions relief for Iran, opening the door to economic activity that, according to Secretary of State John Kerry, will likely result in increased financial support for international terrorism. H.R. 3662 creates heightened disclosure requirements for entities that are to receive sanctions relief. This allows the U.S. to more closely monitor the financial system to prevent funding for terrorism and other dangerous activities such as Iran’s ballistic missile and conventional weapons programs.

“I strongly opposed President Obama’s deal with Iran and continue to oppose sanctions relief,” continued Guthrie. “Prohibiting the president from relieving sanctions unless it’s clear the beneficiary has not supported terrorism should be a common-sense policy.”
