Guthrie Statement on Bowling Green

Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today released the following statement regarding the 2011 arrest of two terrorists in Bowling Green, Ky., a city currently at the center of a major national security debate:

“What many people may not know is that Bowling Green is home to a refugee resettlement program that has welcomed thousands of refugees who are escaping persecution abroad. Unfortunately, in 2011 two Iraqi terrorists responsible for building IEDs used against U.S. soldiers were allowed into the country as refugees and were living in Bowling Green as refugees. They were arrested by the FBI when it became clear they were attempting to build an arsenal of weapons to further target Americans.

“This incident is an important example of why we need a robust vetting process for anyone coming to the United States from countries where terrorists have established a stronghold. We must do everything we can to keep Americans safe from potential terrorists.”
