Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today released the following statement on President Donald Trump’s decision to replace FBI Director James Comey: “President Trump has the right to replace the FBI director. I respect his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, and I look forward to working with the new director following confirmation. Unfortunately, prior to this week's news, it was clear that Director Comey had lost the trust of members on both sides of the aisle. With high stakes investigations ongoing, it is imperative for the leader of the FBI to be free from political controversy. “While we wait to find out who President Trump nominates for this position, the highly professional FBI staff will continue their work on a number of important investigations, along with both the House Intelligence Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which are conducting thorough, bipartisan investigations into national security matters. While I am not a member of these committees, I know many of the members who are, and I have full confidence in their ability to conduct their respective investigations independently.” ### |
