Guthrie Votes to Strengthen Military

Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today released the following statement after the House passed the bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R. 2810) by a vote of 344 to 81.

“With increased security threats around the world, we must ensure the members of our military are fully trained, equipped, and ready for the national security challenges of the 21st Century. I was proud to vote in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act to keep our country safe and support our service men and women. This crucial bill will help to promote efficiency and modernization across the Defense Department to ensure that our troops will be mission-ready and remain the greatest fighting force in the world.

“The National Defense Authorization Act authorizes $631.5 billion for the military. This money will go towards improving facilities at military bases, updating our weapons systems, increasing the end strength of each branch, and giving our troops a well-deserved pay raise. The National Defense Authorization Act also includes several reforms to cut down on unnecessary bureaucracy at the Department of Defense, and it prohibits the transferring of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the United States.”
