Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today condemned President Obama’s plan to close the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“At a time when the security of the United States is constantly under fire from terrorists and other foreign threats such as ISIS, the President’s proposal to close down the prison holding terrorist detainees is dangerous and reckless,” said Congressman Guthrie.  “Once again, the President seems to be more concerned about his legacy and politics than the safety and best interest of the American people.”

On multiple occasions Congress has passed and President Obama has signed into law statutory language that bans the transfer of these prisoners to the United States. Members of the President’s Cabinet and defense officials have publically stated that transferring detainees to the United States from the detention center at Guantanamo Bay would violate the law.

“The President’s plan to bring detainees to the U.S. who are suspected members of terrorist groups, and who are not eligible to be transferred abroad because they have been deemed too dangerous, is extremely alarming.  I will continue to strongly oppose the President’s misguided policy,” added Congressman Guthrie.
