Guthrie Responds to Presidents Gun Control Recommendations

| Posted in Latest News

I look forward to reviewing the President's recommendations; however, I believe that achieving the goal of safety for our children will be best accomplished through focusing on mental health issues as opposed to infringing on the Constitutional right

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) issued the following statement following the release of the President’s recommendations for policy changes in the aftermath of the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut:

“We can all agree that what happened in Newtown was a tragic event that should have never happened. As a father of three, my heart continues to ache for the families and entire Newtown community.

“I look forward to reviewing the President's recommendations; however, I believe that achieving the goal of safety for our children will be best accomplished through focusing on mental health issues as opposed to infringing on the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens.

“We need to focus on the issue at the core of many of these tragedies. Improving mental health care is critical to ensure that future incidences of violence are avoided and that people who are mentally ill cannot access weapons.

“My colleagues and I on the House Energy and Commerce Committee have a renewed focus on mental health and we will certainly discuss how to move forward from this tragedy to hopefully prevent future violent attacks. In addition, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce will be examining school safety and how to best protect our children, and I will be interested in hearing from Kentucky education officials to get their views. Both of these issues are vital to the dialogue and I look forward to reviewing these proposals at the committee level.”

Guthrie Opposes Senate Bill, Demands Spending Cuts

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today issued the following statementafter voting against the Senate’s measure to avert the fiscal cliff:

“After months of discussing how to prevent our country from falling off the fiscal cliff, we reached a deal that was not balanced in its approach. I have said from the very beginning that ensuring we do not go over the fiscal cliff should be a combination of tax reform coupled with spending cuts that are vital to the health of our nation.

“Leadership in both the House and Senate worked tirelessly to come up with an agreement to ensure taxes do not go up for millions of Americans.  While I support that goal, it was ultimately not enough. For too long, House Republicans were told they would see a good-faith discussion on spending cuts. Yet again, we have been told no, that spending cuts will come next time.

“As I travel across the Second District, my constituents continue to ask when Congress will cut spending. My fellow Kentuckians understand that the real fiscal cliff is the one our children will fall off of – in five years when they will be $22 trillion in debt.

“Throughout the economic recession, families and business owners across America have had to tighten their belts and make sacrifices. Our government needs to do the same. This measure, however, does not make a serious effort in making lasting fiscal reforms and therefore I cannot support it.”

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today attended the groundbreaking of the Education Center at The Wall in Washington, DC

“It is important to remember those who served on behalf of our nation.  My uncle gave his life for this country and my Grandmother always wanted our family to remember him for that,” said Congressman Guthrie, who is a member of the honorary committee.  “This facility will be an excellent way for future generations to remember those who have fought for our country.”

The Education Center is a project through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.  By using the stories of veterans, the center seeks to teach the values of loyalty, honor, integrity, duty and courage.

“This is an incredibly unique project that will also serve as a living memorial for those killed while fighting the War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We owe it to each individual who has ever worn the uniform to honor them for their service, and this project will take that mission one step further,” said Congressman Guthrie.

“Through my uncle’s sacrifices and my time at West Point, I know how valuable of a project this center is.  It was an honor to attend the groundbreaking today and I look forward to seeing this project completed,” added Congressman Guthrie.
