In Case You Missed It – On Thursday February 15, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), who serves as the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health, delivered the following remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives in support of H.R. 7176, the Unlocking Our Domestic LNG Potential Act. This bill would lift the Biden administration’s pause on all pending approvals of liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminals and includes strong protections to prohibit trade with a person or foreign country under sanction or listed as a state sponsor of terrorism. Congressman Guthrie’s remarks as prepared are below.

“Thank you Mr. Speaker, I rise in support of the Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act.

Last month, the Biden Administration doubled down on its war against American energy production by effectively banning American LNG exports. This decision disincentivizes American LNG production, eliminates American jobs, hurts our constituents’ bottom line, and undermines our national security.

Two years ago in the aftermath of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, we instituted an embargo on Russian oil and gas, defunding Russia’s war machine. Our European allies joined us in this effort. However, with few domestic alternatives, they rely on our LNG exports. In fact, 87% of LNG exports went to the European Union, United Kingdom, or Asian markets.

I often hear from our NATO allies about the importance of American energy production to global security. Without American energy independence, we and our allies become reliant on our adversaries for our energy needs and economic security. It is paramount to our national security at home and around the world that we continue to make energy in America.

I encourage my colleagues to support this legislation. I yield back.”
