WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) announced the 2021 winners of the Congressional App Challenge from Kentucky’s Second District during Computer Science Education Week. The overall first place winner is Glasgow High School student Emma Bunch, who created the app “Cure.” In total, 55 apps were created for this year’s app challenge, which was the highest participation since Congressman Guthrie started hosting this in 2019. “I am excited to announce that Emma Bunch from Glasgow High School has won the overall 2021 Congressional App Challenge. We had a competitive competition with a record 55 apps submitted. I want to congratulate each student on their hard work in this year’s coding challenge and thank every STEM educator who helped these students develop their skills. As we recognize Computer Science Education Week, I would like to encourage students to practice their coding skills and continue their studies in this important field,” said Guthrie. Each year Congressman Guthrie hosts the Congressional App Challenge to inspire high school and middle school students, regardless of coding experience, to develop new coding skills that students can use to further their education and future careers. The winning apps from each congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website and are eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Bunch, along with other app winners from across the country, will have the opportunity to attend the #HouseofCode event. All the winners from the competition in Kentucky’s Second District will be featured on Guthrie’s website. A panel of computer science experts in Kentucky’s Second District choose the winners of the Congressional App Challenge. The 2020 Congressional App Challenge was won by a team of students from Barren County High School, who created the app, “ShowLocal,” to help showcase local businesses in rural communities.
