Guthrie Supports Student Success Act

Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie today voted in support of H.R. 5, the Student Success Act, legislation that rewrites the nation’s K-12 education laws.

“Today, our education system is failing many of our students,” said Congressman Guthrie during a speech on the House floor. “Only 40 percent of 4th graders are proficient in math and only 34 percent of 8th graders are proficient in reading.”

H.R. 5 is guided by four key principles: reducing the federal footprint, empowering parents, supporting effective teachers and restoring local control. Congressman Guthrie, an original cosponsor and member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, helped lead the portion on supporting effective teachers.

“Current federal guidelines for ‘highly qualified teachers’ are outdated and based solely on a teacher’s credentials, rather than their ability to encourage and improve student achievement. This legislation would allow school districts to create their own evaluation systems to put teachers in the classroom that will motivate and inspire our young people,” said Congressman Guthrie.

“Our children deserve the best education possible. This legislation will put them on a path toward academic excellence,” added Congressman Guthrie.
