Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today voted in favor of the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act, which passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 215-202.

“I was proud to support this measure,” said Congressman Guthrie. “With approximately 12 million Americans out of work, we should be doing everything we can to arm them with the skills and training to re-enter the workforce.”

“These high-skilled, high-wage, and high-demand jobs are the pathways to the American Dream.  I have seen firsthand at my family's manufacturing plant how lives can be transformed through additional skill training and investing in our workforce,” said Congressman Guthrie while speaking on the House floor earlier today.

The SKILLS Act would reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act and revamp our nation’s workforce development system to both train more workers and better protect taxpayer dollars.

The legislation would: eliminate and streamline duplicative training programs; create a flexible Workforce Investment Fund to act as the single source of support for both employers and job seekers; strengthen the role of employers in workforce training decisions; establish common and routine performance measures for state and local leaders; and require local workforce leaders to outline the strategies they plan to use to serve at-risk youth, individuals with disabilities, veterans and other workers with unique barriers to employment.
