Guthrie Votes to Give Working Families More Flexibility

Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today voted for the Working Families Flexibility Act of 2017 (H.R.1180), which would give private-sector employees the opportunity to choose compensatory time, or “comp time,” instead of overtime pay.

Currently, federal government employees can choose whether they would rather receive comp time instead of cash wages for any overtime worked, but private-sector employers are not allowed to offer this benefit to employees. The Working Families Flexibility Act would allow employers to offer the option of comp time to their employees.

“The American workforce is changing, but archaic rules are preventing businesses from offering flexibility to workers,”said Guthrie. “If a mom or dad wants to work overtime one week to attend their child's ball game the next week, they should be allowed to do that. Modern employees have a diverse range of needs and desires, and our one-size-fits-all approach from decades ago needs to be updated.”

The Working Families Flexibility Act retains all employee protections in current law, including the 40-hour workweek and rules governing how overtime compensation is accrued. No employee would be forced to choose comp time under this bill.
