Guthrie Votes to Make R&D Tax Credit Permanent

This tax credit is an important tool in supporting American research. It is irresponsible to keep extending this critical tax credit when we could make it permanent and strive to be the leader in global innovation, said Congressman Guthrie.

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted in support of H.R. 880, the American Research and Competitiveness Act of 2015, which will make the Research and Development (R&D) tax credit permanent.

“Short-term tax provisions are bad for job creators who are trying to plan ahead,” said Congressman Guthrie.  “Making the R&D tax credit permanent will create stability and ensure we remain competitive with our counterparts abroad.”

The R&D tax credit has been extended routinely since 1981.  As countries across the world compete for R&D investment dollars, the United States is at a distinct disadvantage when the tax credit is in limbo.

“This tax credit is an important tool in supporting American research.  It is irresponsible to keep extending this critical tax credit when we could make it permanent and strive to be the leader in global innovation,” added Congressman Guthrie.
