Washington, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement Friday, July 29, 2011, on the Budget Control Act of 2011, after it passed the House. Congressman Guthrie voted in favor of the legislation.
“Our nation’s $14 trillion deficit is a national security risk that holds our entire economy, as well as the health and welfare of future generations, hostage. This bill helps to put our nation back on the path toward fiscal responsibility by offering substantial savings and beginning to address our huge deficit.
“This bill offers nearly a trillion dollars in immediate cuts, reduces the deficit this year by $22 billion and by $917 billion over the next ten years, and fulfills the pledge to cut spending more than the amount of the debt limit increase.
“This bill also begins the process of looking at long-term entitlement reform. If not addressed, our entitlement programs will soon consume the entire federal budget. Failure to act will bankrupt our nation and result in dramatic cuts to beneficiaries and providers. We must work to strengthen these programs for future generations.
“President Obama has failed to show real leadership on this issue and congressional Democrats have failed to produce a viable solution.
“As I have said before, defaulting is not an option. While this bill does not solve all of our deficit or debt problems, it does help to address the irresponsibility of previous congresses and put an end to the cycle of borrowing and spending that has plagued Washington.”
