Washington, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement Thursday, April 7, 2011, after voting yes to H.R. 1363 - funding the troops and government, and includes $12 billion in new spending cuts.
“This resolution keeps the government running and ensures that our men and women in uniform serving around the world will be paid, while adding $12 billion in new spending cuts.
“It is my hope that Senator Reid and the White House step-up and join us, and choose to not push our government further toward a shutdown over reasonable spending reductions.
“House Democrats failed to pass a budget last year and Senate Democrats have yet to offer a plan to complete the 2011 budget. This resolution works to clean up their mess so we can hopefully move on to the 2012 budget, where the true spending discussions lie.
“Our nation’s fiscal situation is dire and we must address the overwhelming burden of our entitlement programs, which will soon consume the entire federal budget. We must work to strengthen these programs for future generations.
“Our country cannot afford to continue to borrow 40 cents for every dollar we spend, and I will continue to support policies that end the borrowing and spending cycle that has defined Congress over the past two years.”
BACKGROUND: Congressman Guthrie supported HR 1, which included $100 billion in cuts through the rest of the current fiscal year. He also supported two short-term funding bills which represent the largest reduction in discretionary spending in history, cutting a total of $10 billion. This brings the total cuts to $22 billion.
