Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement Saturday, July 30, 2011, after the House voted down Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s debt limit proposal. Congressman Guthrie voted against the legislation.

“Senator Reid’s bill doesn’t sufficiently address our nation’s dire fiscal situation.  This bill only cuts $927 billion while giving the president a $2.4 trillion increase in the debt ceiling and relies heavily on a budget gimmick.  In addition, the bill does nothing to advance a Balanced Budget Amendment.

“The House has put forward two proposals - Cut, Cap and Balance and the Budget Control Act.  Each of these plans makes serious attempts to change our fiscal course.  We have acted to cut federal spending, cap future outlays and institute a Balanced Budget Amendment.  We must pay our bills, but also change the way we spend.

“The time for partisan bickering has passed.  I encourage President Obama and Senator Reid to show leadership and put forward a serious proposal that avoids the looming default and also tackles our $14 trillion debt.”
