Washington, DC – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement Monday, August 1, 2011, on S. 365 - the agreement between the House and Senate that will reduce the deficit and avoid default. Congressman Guthrie voted in favor of the legislation.
“We stuck to our principles outlined in Cut, Cap and Balance and we were able to produce a real solution for the American people that puts our nation back on the path toward fiscal responsibility.
“Included are serious spending cuts that exceed the amount of the debt ceiling increase while avoiding job-killing tax increases on families and small businesses.
“It also implements enforceable spending caps to restrain future spending, setting clear limits and serving as a barrier against government expansion. Failure to remain below these caps would trigger automatic across-the-board cuts, putting an end to Washington’s borrowing and spending cycle.
“The bill also advances a Balanced Budget Amendment, requiring Congress to vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment before the end of the year.
“This legislation allows America to pay its bills and begins to deal with our nation’s debt and deficits.”
