Washington, DC – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement Tuesday, January 25, 2011, in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address.

“Many of us watching President Obama’s address tonight were encouraged by his priorities, and willingness to work across the aisle to rebuild our manufacturing base and ensure America remains competitive in the global market.

“These are the exact issues I have discussed since arriving in Washington two years ago.  I have emphasized the need for job creation, instead of massive spending and increasing the size and scope of government. 

“Innovation and job creation will not come from the halls of bureaucrats’ offices in Washington, but in garages and basements across America.  We must encourage small businesses and entrepreneurs, not burden them with increased regulations and higher taxes. 

“Unfortunately, to this point, job creation has meant a trillion-dollar stimulus bill; energy independence meant a cap-and-trade scheme that would bankrupt Kentucky families; and health care reform meant another trillion-dollar bill that empowered federal bureaucrats instead of patients and doctors.

“I appreciate the president’s speech tonight and his new tone and willingness to work with Republicans to move away from the pattern of the last two years.  We must address our unsustainable deficit and the rampant spending that has occurred.

“I am hopeful that the president will fully commit to these ideas of cutting spending and reducing our deficit.  I stand ready to work with House and Senate leadership and President Obama to get our country back on track and restore our competitive edge.”
