Washington, DC Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement Saturday, February 19, 2011, after voting yes to H.R. 1, the Continuing Resolution, funding the government for the remaining months of Fiscal Year 2011:

“For the last two years, we have run annual trillion dollar deficits and our total national debt is exceeding $14 trillion.  Doing nothing to curb this unsustainable fiscal situation would be irresponsible, and clearly not what the American people have asked of us.

“I strongly believe that returning America to responsible spending is vital to the future of our nation. This continuing resolution reduces spending by $100 billion and represents the single largest discretionary spending cut in our nation’s history.

“This shows the new Majority is serious about getting our fiscal house in order and protecting our children’s and grandchildren’s future.

“Many of these cuts are difficult and affect communities across the country.  Making this sizeable of a reduction in spending affects waste and abuse, but it also makes reductions in good programs.  While these reductions are not easy, doing nothing is not an option. Our economy cannot grow and create jobs if government continues to borrow, spend and regulate beyond our means.”
