Washington, DC – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement, today, Tuesday, June 22, 2010, after Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s (D-MD) announced this morning that House Democrats will not do a budget this year.
“Leader Hoyer and Democrat leadership have decided they will not do a budget this year. This is the first time since the current budget rules were put in place in 1974 that there will be no budget.
“The Majority has failed in their most basic responsibility of governing by not producing cancelling the budget. They are now planning to use an emergency defense supplemental bill for non-defense spending. More than 60 percent of the proposed bill, $51 billion, will be for non-military purposes.
“This is just another example of how out of touch the Majority is when it comes to getting our spending and economy back on track.
“In the last 18 months, they’ve spent more than a trillion dollars on so-called 'jobs' and stimulus legislation, but unemployment is nearing 10 percent nationwide and is even higher in many counties in the Second District of Kentucky.
“And they continue to spend at a near-record pace. Through the first eight months of the current fiscal year, the federal government amassed $935 billion in deficit spending.
“I have supported real-world solutions to cut spending now, and support adopting strict budget caps that limit federal spending on an annual basis.
“With their recent decision, the Majority is continuing down the path toward higher taxation and greater debt. The further down this path we go, the harder it will be for us to pass along a country to our children that is greater than the one we were given by our parents.”
