Guthrie Votes To Avoid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 1, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) issued the following statement following the House passage of H.R. 6500, a temporary government funding bill that would fund the government through December 11, 2026. This legislation is designed to provide Congress additional time to complete the Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations process in regular order and avoid a government shutdown at the end of the fiscal year on September 30, 2026. 

“Throughout the 119th Congress, House Republicans have worked to responsibly fund and keep the federal government open,” said Congressman Guthrie. “Today, I voted in favor of a Continuing Resolution to give Congress additional time to finalize the appropriations process without running the risk of another detrimental government shutdown.”

Background:

H.R. 6500 is a continuing resolution that would extend government funding through December 11, 2026. This legislation previously passed the Senate and now heads to President Trump’s desk for signature.

Importantly, this bill would:

  • Allow the Department of Agriculture to continue food assistance programs such as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), for the duration of the CR.
  • Extend other crucial programs in their current form, including key provisions of the National Flood Insurance Act, wildfire suppression efforts, disaster relief, small business support, and livestock reporting for the duration of the CR.
