ICYMI: Why Older Adults – and Taxpayers - are Paying for Democrats’ Lies

Washington, D.C. , September 12, 2024 | DJ Griffin (202-225-3501)

In Case You Missed It - Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), recently published an op-ed in The Washington Times on how the Biden-Harris administration's signature legislation the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has raised premium rates for seniors on Medicare and has raised drug costs in the process.

Below are the highlights of the op-ed published by The Washington Times.

“Two years following the passage of the IRA, seniors are still struggling, and it’s only gotten worse. Seniors are paying more now for fewer options than they had before the law was enacted. Today, there are only half the number of Part D plans available for seniors to choose from than when the program launched in 2006, and 100 fewer plans this year than last year. The number of Medicare Part D plans is expected to be even smaller in 2025. And in October, millions of seniors will begin the process of signing up for their 2025 Medicare plan to see less options at the pharmacy counter.

Worse, premiums have rapidly gone up. In 2020, Part D monthly premiums had actually gone down to $30.00. But since President Biden took office in 2021, Part D premiums have increased by 57 percent, with more on the way.

Harris and Democrats’ decisions unfortunately have real-world consequences. This year, seniors saw premium increases of 21 percent, including up to a 57 percent increase in Harris’ home state of California. In 2025, those premiums are expected to go up at least an additional 50 percent. For seniors on a fixed income, paying significantly more isn’t possible and can be the difference between paying rationing critical medication to being able to put food on the table.”
