Guthrie Leads Letter Criticizing President Biden’s Misguided Approach to Addressing Deadly Fentanyl

Washington, March 11, 2022 | S.K. Bowen (202-225-3501)

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), who serves as the Republican Leader of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee, led a letter with House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) and 16 other Republican colleagues on the Energy and Commerce Committee to President Joe Biden. In the letter, Members share serious concerns about the Biden Administration’s misguided approach to addressing deadly and illicit fentanyl flooding into their communities.

Members expressed specific concerns on the Biden Administration’s failure and unwillingness to secure the Southern Border and a proposal to exempt fentanyl-related substances from quantity-based mandatory minimum sentences. The Members ask why the Biden Administration wants to weaken criminal penalties for traffickers who move fentanyl-related substances.

In 2021 the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seized enough illicit fentanyl to give every American a lethal dose, and this poison is the leading cause of death for Americans 18-45 years old. The Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy’s most recent Overdose Fatality Report, which is for 2020, states that more than 70% of overdose deaths in Kentucky involved illicit fentanyl.
