Guthrie Statement on George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Washington, March 3, 2021 | S.K. Bowen (202-225-3501)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement on H.R. 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

β€œThe deaths of Breonna Taylor in my home state of Kentucky and George Floyd are both tragedies,” said Guthrie. "Many Americans sadly do not have confidence in our criminal justice system, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle want to fix this. I do not believe defunding the police, as the bill we voted on tonight does, is the best to way to address police reform. I am a cosponsor of the JUSTICE Act, which would make a number of changes, including banning chokeholds and creating better law enforcement through stronger training and hires to the police force. Reforms that are included in the JUSTICE Act are needed to help rebuild trust between all communities and law enforcement. I hope that we can put partisanship aside and reach an agreement that will rebuild trust in our communities and heal our nation.”
