ICYMI: Guthrie’s Safeguarding Therapeutics Act Signed Into Law

Washington, January 21, 2021 | S.K. Bowen (202-225-3501)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement on the Safeguarding Therapeutics Act (H.R. 5663) being signed into law.

“Before this law when fake medical devices were illegally sent into the United States, these fraudulent devices would have to be kept in storage or sent back,” said Guthrie. “I introduced the Safeguarding Therapeutics Act with my colleague, former Congressman Eliot Engel, after seeing this issue firsthand during a visit to the International Mail Facility at John F. Kennedy Airport. It’s unfortunate that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, bad actors are sending fake COVID-19 testing kits and other medical devices into our country. With new authority from this bipartisan and commonsense law, the Food and Drug Administration can destroy counterfeit medical devices to help prevent potentially dangerous devices from ever reaching patients.”

The Safeguarding Therapeutics Act was signed into law by then-President Donald Trump on January 5, 2021.
