WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, and Congressman Eliot Engel (NY-16), senior member of the Health Subcommittee, today introduced the Safeguarding Therapeutics Act (H.R. 5663) to protect American consumers from counterfeit medical devices.

The Safeguarding Therapeutics Act will give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to seize and destroy counterfeit medical devices and products such as vaccines and other combination devices that could seriously harm patients.

“Last year, I had the opportunity to visit the International Mail Facility at John F. Kennedy Airport, and I saw firsthand the dangers of counterfeit medical devices being smuggled into the United States,” said Guthrie. “Counterfeit health products pose a serious risk to Americans. The Safeguarding Therapeutics Act will help ensure that these devices do not get into the hands of patients. I want to thank Congressman Engel for introducing this important legislation with me.”

“Counterfeit medical devices and vaccines pray on Americans in need of critical medical care at an affordable price,” said Engel. “The health risks here are obvious and severe. We need to do a better job of cracking down on these dangerous items and I am pleased to join my colleague Rep. Guthrie in introducing this bipartisan bill to keep Americans safe.”
