Guthrie Announces 2017 Congressional Art Competition Winner

Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie today announced Marly Walls of Nelson County as the Second District’s first place winner for the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. Marly, a student at Nelson County High School, submitted a work entitled “Rowan.”

“Every year I am excited to see the impressive artwork submitted by high school students across the Second District,” said Guthrie. “Congratulations to Marly and all of the students who submitted art this year. I look forward to meeting with her in Washington, DC, where her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year.”

The winner and finalists were selected by an independent panel of art professors from colleges and universities across Kentucky’s Second District.

The Congressional Art Competition, which began in 1982, allows the winning artwork from each Congressional District throughout the country to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one full year. The first place overall winner from each Congressional District receives two airline tickets to our nation’s capital where they will attend a reception in their honor later this summer.

The overall second place winner was Anna Wooten of Thomas Nelson High School. The overall third place winner was Slaton Kelley of Edmonson County High School. Their artwork will be displayed in Congressman Guthrie’s district office in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The overall honorable mentions were Alexcis Botts of Breckinridge County High School, Leandra Hart of Nelson County High School, and Cammy Daniels of South Warren High School.

Additionally, Congressman Guthrie will be holding a Facebook Favorite competition for all the county winners, giving members of the general public the opportunity to vote for their favorites as well. Artwork will be posted on his official Facebook page, and the wining piece will be displayed in Congressman Guthrie’s D.C. office. The online competition will be open from April 26 - April 29 at 5:00 PM (CST).
