Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today reintroduced a bill (H.R. 984) for the creation of a taskforce designed to foster inter-agency cooperation for the care of veterans with urotrauma.

“These injuries are some of the most common and debilitating suffered by today’s veterans,” said Congressman Guthrie. “They have long-lasting physical and psychological impacts. Our job here at home is to ensure our veterans come home to the best care and treatment options available. This bill is an important step in that process.”

Urotrauma has quickly become a signature wound of IEDs and currently accounts for one-eighth of all injuries suffered by our troops in Afghanistan.

The legislation, which is fully paid for and adds zero to the deficit, establishes a National Commission on Urotrauma that will be led by the Department of Defense and work with the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services.

The Urotrauma Commission will conduct a comprehensive study on urotrauma, as well as evaluate the public and private resources available for the diagnosis, prevention, treatment of, and research in this condition.

“Our military is the best and bravest. It’s time we focus on this issue and make all our resources available to those who suffer from urotrauma,” added Congressman Guthrie.
