SHARES Act Included in Legislative Package to Improve Safety, Maximize Opportunities for Emerging Industry
Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today applauded House passage of the SELF DRIVE Act (H.R. 3388), a package of bills to improve the safety of self-driving vehicles while promoting innovations in research and development so the United States can remain a global leader in this industry. Congressman Guthrie’s bill, the Sharing Automated Vehicle Records with Everyone for Safety (SHARES) Act, was included in this package, which passed the House by voice vote. “Over the past month during the August District work period, I had a chance to visit with several Second District companies at the forefront of new automated vehicle technologies,” said Guthrie. “Self-driving cars are the future of our automotive industry, but we need to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. I introduced the SHARES Act, which would establish a framework for manufacturers of self-driving cars to share information related to situational testing without compromising their confidential business information, in order to increase the amount of testing data available across the industry. I was proud to see this bill included in the SELF DRIVE Act, a bipartisan legislative package which passed by voice vote with overwhelmingly bipartisan support on the floor today. I urge the Senate to take up this bill as soon as possible.” The SELF DRIVE Act previously passed out of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce unanimously by a vote of 54-0.
