Guthrie Announces New Competition for High School Students

The House STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) App Challenge provides an opportunity for individual students or teams up to four, to display their talents by constructing a plan for a software application (app) for a tablet, computer or mobile device.

Washington, DC– Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) today announced a new competition sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives for high school students. The House STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) App Challenge provides an opportunity for individual students or teams up to four, to display their talents by constructing a plan for a software application (app) for a tablet, computer or mobile device.

“The advancements of technology have made so many of our daily rituals accessible by the touch of a button,” said Congressman Guthrie. “With smartphones and tablets at the ready, this competition allows students to come up with a model for an app they would like to see and be able to use in their own daily lives.”

The competition is the first of its kind. Students who wish to participate in the competition must submit a YouTube video explaining how their app would work, what they learned during the competition, and a document detailing the concept of their proposed app, its implementation and impact.

While participants will only be judged on their conceptual plan for an app, students are encouraged to explore the process and fully develop their app. Students who choose to take this extra step can also include a video detailing how the app would be used.

The competition opens February 1st at 12 PM EST and closes on April 30th at 12 PM EST. The winner for Kentucky’s Second District will be announced in May. The model for the winning app will be featured on both the House website as well as Congressman Guthrie’s website.
