House Reconvenes, Elects Speaker

In November, the Republican Conference unanimously selected Speaker Boehner as the Republican candidate for Speaker and I stand by that decision, said Congressman Guthrie.

Washington, DCCongressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) issued the following statement after voting in support of Rep. John Boehner (OH-8) for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Today I proudly cast my vote for Speaker John Boehner.  John has always been willing to tackle the tough issues, listening to all voices in the Conference, and I am confident that he will continue to put the needs of America first.

“While I appreciate the debate and consideration of other candidates, the time for such discussion was last fall.  In November, the Republican Conference unanimously selected Speaker Boehner as the Republican candidate for Speaker and I stand by that decision.  Any alternate candidates or effort to elect a new Speaker should have been discussed at that time, not held until prime media attention on the House floor.  The American people voted for change and for our government to start working again, and that must start today.”
