Guthrie Votes to Lift Oil Export Ban

President Obama supports allowing Iran to export oil and grow its economy, but I support growing our own economy by ending this self-imposed embargo, and establishing America as a dominant supplier of the world's energy, said Congressman Guthrie

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted in support of H.R. 702, legislation to lift the ban on oil exports and address our country’s growing energy needs.

Put in place in 1975, the ban on crude oil exports was a response to the Arab oil embargo.  Now, 40 years later, the United States is the world’s leading oil producer using advanced and tested technologies that are safe for workers, communities and the environment.

“We need to update this policy so our energy agenda is in sync with the needs of our 21st Century economy,” said Congressman Guthrie.  “Ending the ban would lead to thousands of new jobs and increased energy security and independence.  This is also a national security priority and a prime opportunity to counterbalance Russia’s influence in the Middle East and Asia by providing alternative energy supplies to the global market.”

“President Obama supports allowing Iran to export oil and grow its economy, but I support growing our own economy by ending this self-imposed embargo, and establishing America as a dominant supplier of the world’s energy,” added Congressman Guthrie
