Guthrie Supports Bill to Recycle, Reduce Coal Ash Waste

This bill provides for the safe disposal of coal ash, which means safer recycling, more jobs and lower utility costs, said Congressman Guthrie.
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted in support of H.R. 1734, the Improving Coal Combustion Residuals Regulation Act of 2015. “This bill provides for the safe disposal of coal ash, which means safer recycling, more jobs and lower utility costs,” said Congressman Guthrie. “By setting up state permit programs that can be enforced at the federal level, states will appropriately maintain their power to implement coal ash programs.” In doing so, the states must meet minimum requirements for the programs, but will be permitted to expand on those provisions beyond the minimum standards. The Environmental Protection Agency will be able to review a state’s permit program at any time to ensure the minimum requirements are met. All permit-related information must be available on the Internet for public access. “Coal is a part of life in Kentucky. In establishing this regime for management and safe disposal of coal ash, we encourage recycling and reduce waste. These are both worthy goals that will support coal’s major role in Kentucky’s economy, and ensure a continuous supply of coal ash for industries that rely on it for their own production,” added Congressman Guthrie. ### |
