Guthrie Secures Funding for University of Kentucky Bio-Fuels Research

Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) announced today that he secured $1 million for continued work at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research's Bio-fuels Research Laboratory.

Washington, DC – Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) announced today that he secured $1 million for continued work at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research’s Bio-fuels Research Laboratory.

“I am pleased to secure funding for this important research at the University of Kentucky,” Guthrie said.  “This research will be critical as we work to develop energy sources that are flexible and renewable.  I applaud UK for investing in the efforts to help make our country energy independent.”

“I can’t thank Congressman Guthrie enough for this $1 million direct appropriation that will help fund some of the innovative and leading-edge energy research taking place within our Biofuels Research Laboratory,” said UK President Lee T. Todd, Jr. “The work supported by these funds will be immediately available to our partners in the Second District and throughout Western Kentucky, where Kentucky’s agricultural base is also becoming the heart of Kentucky’s developing bio-fuels industry.”

The Bio-fuels Research Laboratory is a collaborative project between UK’s Center for Applied Energy Research and Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering researchers in its College of Agriculture, who are working together to turn biomass into fuels, chemicals, and materials.

Furthering his commitment to renewable energy sources, Guthrie also secured $500,000 for bio-fuels research at the Western Kentucky University Institute for Combustion Science and Environmental Technology.

These funds were included in FY 2010 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, which is expected to pass the U.S. House of Representatives this week.
