Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) co-sponsored H.R. 235, the Social Security Fairness Act. This legislation will eliminate provisions that have unfair and adverse effects on educators and some state employees. “This is one of the very first bills I am cosponsoring because I do not believe that our teachers, principals, and other eligible employees should be subject to these unwarranted penalties,” Guthrie said. “This important piece of legislation will repeal the windfall elimination provision (WEP) and the government pension offset (GPO).” The WEP reduces an educator’s Social Security based on earnings from previous employment, and the GPO eliminates an educator’s Social Security benefits from a deceased spouse. |
