Washington, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. Res. 214, a resolution introduced by Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) that recognizes the efforts of the countless volunteers who helped the Commonwealth of Kentucky recover from the January 26, 2009 ice storm.

“Too often, after a disaster of this magnitude, we spend more time talking about what went wrong in the days following the storm than talking about what went right,”  Guthrie said.  “Today, we recognized what went well, and that is the volunteers who made a distinct difference in the lives of many Kentuckians following this terrible storm.”

In the days following the ice storm, volunteers from 25 organizations in 15 states came to Kentucky to provide help and support to those affected by the storm.  In the end, volunteers operated 192 shelters that provided 7,884 Kentuckians with shelter, food, and water.

“No matter the size of the volunteer effort, they all made a difference in saving lives and helping the Commonwealth of Kentucky get back on its feet after this terrible storm.  These volunteers are a true testament to the American spirit,” Guthrie added.
