Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (Bowling Green) presided as Ranking Member over the first Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee hearing of the 111th Congress.
A panel of experts, including Sherry Johnson, of Elizabethtown, Ky., testified about the best practices and innovative ideas from the Workforce Investment Act of 1998.
“Our country is facing its toughest economic challenges in recent memory. As more and more Americans join the ranks of the unemployed, there has never been a more critical time to make sure that our workforce has the opportunity to find new jobs or receive additional training,” Guthrie said before the subcommittee. “If we are serious about restoring our economy, it is vitally important that the Workforce Investment Act be reauthorized now.”
“I come from a manufacturing background so I have seen firsthand that unemployed workers who receive additional training can obtain a new, higher-paying job, which radically transforms their way of life,” Guthrie added.
Congressman Guthrie invited Sherry Johnson, the Associate Director for Employment and Training Programs with the Lincoln Trail Area Development District, to testify before the subcommittee.
The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 is the nation’s primary assistance for unemployed and underemployed workers.
Congressman Guthrie is the top Republican on the Higher Education Subcommittee. The Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness, which is part of the Education and Labor Committee, oversees education and training beyond the high school level.
