Washington, DC – Recognized for his proven leadership and commitment to education, Congressman Brett Guthrie (Bowling Green) was named the Ranking Member on the House Subcommittee on Higher Education today.

“I’m honored to be named the Ranking Member on this panel,” Guthrie said.  “This will be an important role as we work to restore economic growth, not only for the Second District and Kentucky, but for the rest of the country as well.  I look forward to building coalitions across party lines as we continue improving two key foundations of the American workforce –education and competitiveness.”

The Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness, which is part of the Education and Labor Committee, oversees education and training beyond the high school level.

“Congressman Guthrie is an ideal choice to serve as the top Republican on the Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness panel,” said Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA), the Education and Labor Committee’s senior Republican member. “His experience with higher education issues in his district coupled with his commitment to economic development through postsecondary opportunity will make his a powerful voice on behalf of American students and families.”

Guthrie will also serve on the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions and the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittees.

Guthrie’s other committee assignment, Transportation and Infrastructure, asked him to serve on three subcommittees:  Aviation; Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials; and Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management.

“These assignments are significant for the Second District,” Guthrie stated.  “As our region continues to grow and change, so do our transportation needs.  I will be a strong voice on these subcommittees to make sure Washington is listening to the needs of our district.”
