Guthrie Gets First Hand Look at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp

Washington, DC – Following his trip on Monday to the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba detention camp, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement:

“Having witnessed firsthand how this facility operates, I can say without question that it should remain open.  It is an immense resource to U.S. military and intelligence operations.

“Shutting Guantanamo down would prevent our military from gathering key information in the fight against terrorism and pose a threat to our national security.  The individuals there are directly linked to the al-Qaeda network and pose the greatest danger and threat to the United States.  There is no more appropriate or secure place to house them.”

“Guantanamo has gained a negative reputation for reasons that are not valid.  Torture techniques have never been used there, and interrogation is voluntary.  I would encourage the President to visit the facility to make his own judgment before closing it.”

Guthrie and five other Members of Congress toured the Guantanamo facility and received briefings from military officials.
