Washington, DC – Congressman Brett Guthrie (Bowling Green) was asked this week to serve on the Republican Whip Team for the 111th Congress. He was also named to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and Committee on Education and Labor.
“I’m proud to serve in this leadership position and as a member of these critical committees,” Congressman Guthrie said. “Each of these assignments provides unique opportunities to fight for the Second District.”
The Whip team helps the Republican Whip manage the party’s legislative program on the House floor.
“This week begins our march toward a stronger future for America based on revitalized, common sense ideals,” said Congressman Eric Cantor, the Republican Whip. “I’m pleased that Congressman Guthrie has joined the Republican Whip Team, the team that will act as the cornerstone of House Republican efforts to preserve, protect and create a better tomorrow for working families. This team is comprised of top leaders that will advance a positive vision for the future of our country, a vision based on accountability, transparency and action. I look forward to getting to work alongside of Brett."
Congressman Guthrie will also serve on the important Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. This committee covers a variety of issues crucial to the Second District, including highways, bridges, transit and aviation systems, railroads, and maritime and waterborne transportation. The Committee also oversees clean water infrastructure, economic development programs, and disaster preparedness and response efforts.
“Serving on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee enables me to use the experience I gained in the state Senate to advocate for our district. As our region continues to grow, it is essential that we make investments to meet our changing needs,” Guthrie said. “This is an extremely meaningful position for the Second District.”
Congressman Guthrie served as chairman of the Transportation Committee in the Kentucky State Senate.
“My congratulations to Brett on his selection to this committee,” said Congressman John Mica, the Republican Leader of the committee. “His expertise on transportation issues will make him a valuable member of the team. I look forward to using his knowledge as we work to continue moving our country forward.”
Guthrie’s other committee assignment, the Education and Labor Committee, oversees early childhood education, higher education, and workforce development.
“Education and workforce development are truly the foundation for growth in the economy of the Second District. There has never been a more important time to be in a position to spur economic growth than now,” Congressman Guthrie said.
As a state Senator, Guthrie was recognized for his dedication to education issues, receiving the African American Equity Coalition's “Children's Champion” award and the College Board's “State Education Leader of the Year” award.
