Brett’s Bulletin: Setting the Agenda for the Rest of the 119th Congress

Friend,

Throughout the past year and a half, Congress has taken action to cut taxes, secure our borders, eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in government programs, and so much more. But our work isn’t done yet; House Republicans will continue to deliver on the most pressing issues facing the American people.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, I have spent the past few weeks working to advance legislation that will drive much of Republicans’ agenda in Congress for the rest of the year. Take a look below to learn more.

Protecting Ratepayers from Increased Energy Costs

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce recently continued our work to protect American families from higher electricity bills due to data center development. During our full Committee markup, we voted unanimously to advance the Ratepayer Protection Act to the House floor.

If signed into law, our bill will codify President Trump’s Executive Order to prevent Americans from having to pay for energy infrastructure upgrades to support data centers.  Specifically, it would amend the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act to require each state regulatory authority to consider establishing a large-load standard, requiring large-load data center customers to cover the full, incremental cost of any generation, transmission, or distribution upgrade necessary to serve the energy load for the customer.

Increasing Transparency in Health Care

Something both sides of the aisle can agree on is that the lack of transparency in health care must be addressed. During our recent full Committee markup, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce unanimously voted to advance my Lower Costs, More Transparency Act to the full House.

This legislation seeks to address a wide array of challenges that exist with price transparency in our health care system. By requiring hospitals to disclose information about the standard charges and prices for each item and service provided, bringing much-needed transparency to health care, I am confident that this bill will increase health care affordability and improve the well-being of countless American families.

Addressing the Illicit Drug Crisis

Throughout the 119th Congress, my Committee has led the charge to combat illicit drugs that have wreaked havoc in our communities.

During a full Committee markup, we advanced the Stop Pills That Kill Act to implement sentencing guidelines for the production of fentanyl, fentanyl analogues, and fentanyl-related substances, as well as legislation that cracks down on illicit pill presses that have contributed to the production of deadly drugs.

Fighting to Streamline Permitting

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce recently released our comprehensive permitting reform bill, the POWER Act, to address America's broken permitting system and lower energy costs for hard-working families.

For too long, burdensome regulations that fail to meet the moment have held back economic growth. Our bill cuts the red tape holding back American innovation, protects hard-working families from higher costs, and keeps the lights on for generations to come.

The D.C. Recap

Supporting Our National Defense

On July 22nd, the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act, FY2027, which would authorize $1.15 trillion in discretionary defense spending, matching President Trump’s presidential budget request.

As a graduate of West Point and former officer in the U.S. Army, I am proud to support this year’s NDAA, which ensures America’s heroes have the tools and support necessary to carry out their mission. This legislation unleashes America’s defense manufacturing capabilities and invests in much-needed quality of life improvements for our servicemembers. This bill is a win for our military and national security, plain and simple. Learn more about this NDAA HERE.

Combatting Tick-Borne Diseases

The House of Representatives voted to pass legislation that would reauthorize the Kay Hagan Tick Act, to continue the National Strategy and Regional Centers of Excellence in Vector-Borne Disease and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) cooperative agreements with health departments in areas at high risk of vector-borne diseases.

As vector-borne diseases, especially those stemming from ticks, continue to rise across the country, I am glad to see my Committee and the full House take steps to counter them and support the health and well-being of American families.

Increasing Access to Care for Alzheimer’s Patients

The House passed the Accelerating Access to Dementia and Alzheimer’s Provider Training (AADAPT) Act unanimously. Since coming to Congress, I have been proud to lead and vote in favor of legislation to support patients living with Alzheimer’s and their families.

This bill would reauthorize programs that support specialized training for rural health care providers for the detection and treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s. This legislation will help rural providers provide earlier support, more accurate information, and care that reflects each patient’s unique needs.
