On this Memorial Day, as you gather with your family and friends, remember we get to gather together in the greatest country on Earth because of the men and women who sacrificed their lives so we can be together. Memorial Day is an important day to my family. I remember as a little kid, my grandmother would always pick us up and take us to the gravesite of my uncle, Robert Guthrie, who died in the Korean War. The flag that was on his coffin when he came home that was presented to my grandmother is the flag that you see behind me. So, as we gather together this day, let us always remember that we’re able to gather together because of the men and women who sacrificed for the greatest country on Earth.

It was an honor meeting them at the WWII Memorial as they traveled with Honor Flight Bluegrass to see the monuments that recognize their service and sacrifices. Kentucky’s Second District is the home of active-duty service members and veterans. I’m proud to be these heroes’ representative and serve them in Congress.

Honoring Law Enforcement Officers

National Police Week was May 14-20, 2023. I’m proud to Back the Blue and stand with law enforcement officers who work to combat crime and keep our communities safe. At the beginning of Police Week, I met with a family from Breckinridge County. They are the family members of the late Deputy Jerry Critchelow, who was a Kentucky State Police trooper and School Resource Officer in Ohio County. I enjoyed meeting with Deputy Jerry Critchelow’s family and hearing them share stories of the deputy’s life of service.

During National Police Week, I voted for pro-law enforcement bills, including a resolution to memorialize law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and recognize their acts of sacrifice and heroism. Additionally, I voted to condemn the defunding and abolishing the police movement and voted to make assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense for non-U.S. citizens. I also supported legislation that would allow law enforcement officers to purchase their retired service weapon.

I’m grateful for the service of the late Deputy Critchelow and law enforcement officers across Kentucky and the nation.
