I recently voted in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2023 because I believe it supports Fort Knox’s mission and service members and their families. On top of supporting mission readiness, the NDAA will help service members and their families with the rising cost of living due to inflation. This includes a pay raise, increased housing allowances, and funding to reduce the costs of food and other goods at military commissaries. The next step for the NDAA is for it to be passed by the Senate.
Baby Formula
I voted recently to help lower the cost of baby formula for families by removing tariffs on imported baby formula. This is my latest effort to help alleviate the baby formula crisis for families. I believe the federal government’s clumsy response exacerbated the crisis, and I’m conducting oversight to figure out what happened under the Biden Administration and to improve the response in the future. I also introduced the More Options for Infants and Parents Act to get more products on the shelves by making the FDA immediately review pending baby formula applications. This bill would also educate families on substitutes, including for babies with amino-acid or metabolic conditions, by requiring the FDA to publish a list of substitutes on their website for formulas in shortage or at risk of being in shortage.
Preserving the Lincoln Memorial
I’m proud to represent the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln and thoroughly enjoy visiting the national park in Kentucky’s Second District that shares the history of the 16th president’s humble beginnings and features the first memorial to President Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is also honored with the Lincoln Memorial in D.C., and this year is the Lincoln Memorial’s 100th anniversary. This week, I co-sponsored a bill that would direct the U.S. mint to issue a commemorative coin on the Lincoln Memorial’s 100th anniversary. The proceeds from this coin would go towards long-term maintenance to preserve the memorial on the National Mall of the Kentucky-born president for Kentuckians and other Americans to enjoy for years to come.
