As a senior member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, I recently received a briefing from national security experts on the national security risks posed by apps like TikTok that are owned by our foreign adversaries. That’s why I was proud to vote to protect our national security and Americans’ personal data from the dangers posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). To be clear this is NOT a ban of TikTok. The bill that I helped pass through the House simply requires the CCP controlled company, ByteDance, to divest their interest in TikTok.
The CCP has used companies it controls, like ByteDance, to covertly target, surveil, and influence the American people and our way of life. Congress must stay vigilant in protecting American national security and not allow Americans’ data to fall into the hands of our adversaries. I am proud of the work the Energy & Commerce Committee has done to protect our national security, and the private data of everyday Americans.
