Introduced Landmark Legislation to Fight Against the Overdose Epidemic
In 2018, I helped to pass the crucial Substance Use Disorder Prevention That Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities Act (SUPPORT Act). This bill provided access to substance use disorder treatment services for the most vulnerable seeking to overcome addiction. Specifically, the legislation provided coverage for certified opioid treatment programs for patients on Medicare and temporarily provided coverage of medication assisted treatment for Medicaid recipients.
I am proud to reintroduce this legislation to continue providing for substance use disorder treatment that has helped millions of Americans overcome their substance use disorders. In just the past two years, more than 200,000 Americans have tragically lost their lives to drug overdoses and poisonings, driven by synthetic opioids such as illicit fentanyl.
Through the reauthorization of this legislation Congress can build upon prior work to promote prevention and access to life-saving care to help curb this horrific epidemic that has taken the lives of too many Kentuckians.
