Brett’s Bulletin: Remembering Our Veterans and Protecting our Law Enforcement Heroes

Dear Friends,

It has been a productive last few weeks meeting so many of you across the district and working on your behalf in Washington. I am proud of the dedication and passion of so many of the Kentuckians I have met with, including students from across the Second District that give me so much hope for the future. I have also been working hard alongside my House Republican colleagues passing legislation to protect our law enforcement officers across Kentucky and at our Southern border from those who wish to do them harm. I am honored to be working on your behalf each and every day to ensure you have a voice in Washington and in shaping the future of our nation.

On this upcoming Memorial Day weekend we remember and honor the sacrifice and last full measure of devotion of the brave men and women who have given their life in defense of our nation. In my family, Memorial Day has always been a time of reflection to honor the life of my uncle SFC Robert Guthrie who was killed in the Korean War. This weekend join me in honoring Gold Star families, like my own, that have lost a loved one in defense of the freedoms and liberties that make America the greatest nation on Earth.

Standing up For Our Law Enforcement Officials Across the Commonwealth and Our Nation

police

Last week my House colleagues and I celebrated Police Week, where we commemorated the valiant work our law enforcement officials do day in and day out to keep our communities safe. These brave men and women leave each morning not knowing what their day may hold and if they will return safely to their family that evening. That’s why it is imperative we provide them with all the tools necessary to keep themselves and our communities safe from whatever threats they may encounter, including deadly drugs that have poured in through our Southern border into communities across the Commonwealth.

House Republicans’ passed Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s (NJ-02) Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act which ensures Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can immediately deport all illegal immigrants who are arrested for assaulting a law enforcement officer. We must hold these individuals accountable who have crossed our border illegally and committed acts of violence against law enforcement by ensuring they never step foot in the United States again!

We also passed Congressman Anthony D’Esposito’s (NY-04) Police Our Border Act. This bill requires the Attorney General to report detailed information on how Biden’s border policies are impacting our law enforcement, including exposure to dangers such as fentanyl and human traffickers, injuries sustained, financial burdens, and operational strains. It is well passed time we work to secure our Southern border in addition to ensuring resources aren’t being taken from local law enforcement efforts to clean up the Biden administration’s policies which have created a disaster at the border.

My Key Priority to Expand Internet and Telecommunications Passes the House

health

On May 15, my bill the Novel, Advanced Spectrum and Communications Technology Networks Promotion Act overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives in bipartisan fashion as part of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Reauthorization Act.

Our nation’s spectrum plays a key role in the future of our national security, weather monitoring, cellular service, and Americans’ favorite television shows. As our wireless technologies continue to advance, we must improve the management and utilization of this important resource.

The future of spectrum will be key to America’s continued leadership of next generation technologies. I am working to ensuring that this bill quickly passes the Senate and is signed into law.

Standing Up for Kentucky Values Against Biden’s Anti-Coal Policies

Big Rivers

On April 25, Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency released the strictest regulations against fossil fuel power plants in the history of our nation. These mandates set standards that are not technologically nor economically achievable in an effort to regulate coal power out of existence. This is just another example of the Biden administration's anti-domestic energy policies that will raise costs and put reliability of our electric grid at risk.

The rule makes regulatory compliance so expensive that coal plants may have no other choice than to be forced to shut down. Plant closures would have a devastating impact on communities that rely on fossil fuels for energy and would put more pressure on an already strained electric grid.

This week, I introduced a Congressional Review Act resolution alongside Congressman Mike Collins (GA-10) that will reverse this Biden administration rule. As our electricity demands across Kentucky and the nation grow, we cannot lose a key portion of our power generation that keeps the lights on and costs low.

We must look to expand our energy portfolio using an all of the above agenda that does not single out fossil fuels but embraces all forms of energy to fuel the next generation of innovation around our country.

Supporting our Seniors and Those Not Able to Stand up for Themselves

health 81

On May 16, my bill the Building America’s Healthcare Workforce Act was passed out of the Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee, which I chair. This key piece of legislation will help bolster our long-term care workforce and ensure seniors have access to high-quality health care services.

Biden’s recent nursing home staff mandates puts seniors’ access to quality care at serious risk. This rule will cost nursing homes more than $6.5 billion just to come into compliance, including more than $70 million annually in KY. This comes at a time when we still need to backfill 125,000 jobs in the industry to reach pre-pandemic staffing levels and as nursing homes are closing across the country.

By contrast my bill helps to try to solve the long term care workforce shortage by allowing nursing assistants more time to obtain their certifications in areas currently experiencing workforce shortages. Through this process we can work together with long term care facilities to address workforce shortages while ensuring seniors have the best access to care.
